Choosing Perimeter Security Fencing

A practical guide to selecting perimeter security fencing by threat level, from chain link to 868 double wire and razor-topped systems, with sourcing tips.

Choosing Perimeter Security Fencing

Start With a Threat Assessment, Not a Catalogue

The most common fencing mistake is choosing a product first and justifying it afterwards. Effective perimeter design starts by asking what you are protecting against: opportunistic trespass, organised theft, vandalism, or a determined intruder with tools and time. A storage yard losing copper has a different problem from a school keeping children safe, and both differ from a substation that must stop sabotage. Define the delay you need, that is, how many minutes a breach should take before guards or police respond, and let that number drive wire gauge, aperture and toppings. A perimeter is a system of mesh, posts, foundations, gates and detection working together; the weakest element sets the real security level. At Zhongman we ask clients these questions first, because the right fence is the cheapest one that actually meets the threat.

Matching Mesh Type to Security Level

Fencing falls into a rough hierarchy. Chain link and woven mesh are economical demarcation boundaries that deter casual entry but are easily cut or climbed. Welded panel mesh adds rigidity and a cleaner look for commercial sites. Double wire 868 and 656 panels step up to genuine anti-cut, anti-climb performance with their narrow 200 x 50 mm aperture and doubled horizontal wires. At the top sit high-security systems, often 358 mesh with a 76 x 12.7 mm aperture too tight for fingers or cutters, frequently combined with anti-climb spikes or razor coil. Expanded metal and perforated panels offer alternatives where partial privacy or a solid appearance is wanted. We manufacture across this whole range, so our recommendation is driven by your site rather than by what we happen to stock.

Posts, Foundations and Gates

A fence is only as strong as what holds it up. Posts must be sized for wind load and impact, set in concrete footings deep enough for the soil and the panel height; a 3 metre panel on shallow posts will simply be pushed over. Rectangular hollow sections resist twisting better than round posts for rigid panels. Gates are the perennial weak point: a heavy-duty cantilever or swing gate must match the fence line in mesh type, height and coating, and its locking, hinges and ground clearance deserve as much scrutiny as the runs. Toppings such as razor concertina, rotating spikes or extension arms turn a climbable height into a serious obstacle. Zhongman supplies posts, fittings, gates and toppings as a coordinated package so the perimeter performs as one engineered line, not a patchwork of mismatched parts.

Coatings for the Service Environment

Perimeter fencing lives outdoors for decades, so corrosion protection is a core security decision, not a cosmetic one. A rusted, weakened fence is a failed fence. Hot-dip galvanizing is the standard baseline, with zinc that self-heals small scratches. For coastal or industrial atmospheres we recommend Galfan zinc-aluminium, which dramatically extends life in salt and pollution. A PVC or polyester powder topcoat adds a second barrier and lets you blend the fence into its surroundings or make it deliberately visible. Specify a minimum coating thickness and insist on test certificates, because thin zinc is the most common hidden corner-cut. Because Zhongman galvanizes and coats in-house, we can guarantee and document the protection system rather than passing the risk down the chain.

Sourcing and Specifying With Confidence

A good fencing specification names the mesh type and grade, panel height and aperture, post and foundation detail, gate requirements, coating system with thickness, and the relevant ASTM or EN standard. State your delay target so suppliers understand the intent. For imported projects, demand container-ready packing; bent panels and rust-spotted posts that arrive damaged destroy any saving on price. Zhongman exports complete perimeter packages worldwide, palletised and strapped for safe transit, with mill and coating certificates included. Whether you are upgrading a single yard or specifying kilometres of boundary across multiple sites, send us your site conditions, threat level and drawings, and our team will propose a compliant, costed solution and a sample before you commit.
