Product Introduction

Narrow welded mesh strips laid into mortar bed joints to tie masonry together and resist cracking. Galvanized or stainless, widths for brick and block walls, thin profile fits standard 10mm joints. Strengthens walls, lintels and openings.

Product Overview

Brick reinforcement mesh, also widely known as bed joint or wall reinforcement mesh, is a slim welded wire strip specifically designed to sit inside the horizontal mortar joints of brick and block walls. Laid every few courses as the wall rises, it ties the masonry firmly together in the horizontal plane, distributing stresses and holding the wall against the cracks that inevitably come from settlement, thermal movement and concentrated point loads. Its deliberately low profile fits comfortably within a standard 10mm bed joint without raising the course heights, and once it is fully embedded in mortar it remains completely hidden in the finished wall. We supply it in convenient strip rolls for fast continuous laying and in flat pre-cut lengths to suit any wall thickness or detail.

How It Strengthens Masonry

Masonry is inherently strong in compression but quite weak in tension, so walls tend to crack wherever bending or differential movement creates a tensile stress that the bricks alone cannot resist. Embedding welded mesh into the bed joints adds genuine tensile capacity at exactly the points where it is needed most, bridging the weak zones around openings, over lintels, beneath windowsills and at any change in wall height. The continuous welded grid efficiently transfers load from one section of wall across to the next, which prevents an isolated crack from propagating along the wall. It also helps tie leaf to leaf in cavity construction and reinforces the critical first courses sitting just above the foundations, producing a noticeably more robust and longer-lasting wall for very little extra bricklaying labour.

Applications

Bed joint mesh is used right throughout both residential and commercial masonry construction. Bricklayers routinely lay it above and below window and door openings to resist the cracking that concentrates at these stress points, and along the very first courses of walls built on ground that may yet settle. It reinforces long, unbroken wall panels, parapets, freestanding garden walls and retaining sections, and it helps control cracking wherever two dissimilar materials meet in a wall. Specifiers also call for it in seismic and high-wind regions to improve the overall integrity and ductility of block and brick construction under dynamic loads. The stainless versions are specifically chosen for external, exposed or marine walls where reliable durability over the building's full design life is absolutely critical.

Specifications & Customisation

We produce bed joint mesh in a range of widths that match the common brick and block dimensions, typically running from around 60mm up to 280mm, in either a ladder pattern or a continuous grid with small apertures of roughly 12.5 to 25mm. Wire diameter ranges from 0.7 to 1.5mm, which keeps the strip thin enough to bed neatly into a standard joint while still delivering genuinely useful tensile strength to the wall. The available finishes are galvanized for normal internal and external use, or stainless steel 304 for harsh, wet and exposed environments. We supply the strips either in coils for rapid continuous laying or as pre-cut lengths, and we can adjust the width, pattern and coating to suit your particular masonry specification.

Why Choose Gabion Works

Gabion Works manufactures bed joint reinforcement on precision welders that keep the finished strip flat, narrow and dimensionally consistent, so it lays cleanly down into the mortar without fouling the bricklayer's trowel or disrupting the courses. We carefully control both wire quality and coating weight to ensure the embedded mesh resists corrosion for the entire life of the wall, and we can certify the material grades wherever the relevant building codes demand it. Our coil and cut-length packaging is sized sensibly for easy handling on site, and our reliable export logistics keep both builders' merchants and contractors properly stocked across many markets. For dependable, code-compliant masonry reinforcement that performs quietly for decades, we are a thoroughly proven and trusted supplier.
