Gabion Mesh
Wire cage gabions for fast assembly, stone filling and structural protection.
Description
Wire cage gabions for fast assembly, stone filling and structural protection.
Gabion Wire Cages are modular box-shaped baskets used to contain stone and form stable, permeable protective structures. Each cage is fabricated from low-carbon steel wire, woven into double-twisted hexagonal mesh or assembled from rigid welded mesh panels, then folded into a rectangular box with a hinged lid. On site, individual panels and adjacent cages are connected with lacing wire, spiral binders or fastening clips and filled with hard angular rock to create a heavy, self-stable mass. The wire is protected by hot-dipped galvanizing or an additional PVC coating, giving long service life in wet, saline and corrosive environments. Because the filled cages behave as a flexible monolithic unit, they accommodate ground settlement and hydraulic loading without cracking.
Gabion wire cages offer a strong, flexible and economical alternative to rigid retaining structures: • Modular design: standard box units are easily combined to build walls and structures of any length and height. • Fast assembly: cages ship flat or folded and are quickly erected, filled and laced with local labour and basic tools. • Flexibility: the wire structure absorbs settlement and ground movement without failure, unlike concrete. • Permeability: open stone fill drains freely, relieving water pressure behind walls and along channels. • Durability: hot-dipped galvanized or PVC-coated wire resists corrosion for decades. • Strength: the filled mass resists scour, erosion and hydraulic forces. • Cost efficiency: locally sourced fill stone keeps material costs low and reduces shipping volume.
Gabion wire cages are manufactured to typical industry parameters and can be customized to project requirements. Mesh wire diameter is generally available in the 2.0-4.0 mm range, with heavier selvedge, frame and lacing wires for reinforced edges and connections. Hexagonal mesh openings are commonly offered as 60×80, 80×100 and 100×120 mm, while welded cages can be supplied in square or rectangular openings. Coating options include heavy hot-dipped galvanizing, Galfan zinc-aluminium alloy and an additional PVC or PE layer for enhanced corrosion resistance in harsh conditions. Cage dimensions, internal diaphragm spacing, panel thickness and PVC color are all available options and can be customized to drawings. All cages are produced to international standards for gabion and wire mesh works.
Gabion wire cages are applied across a broad spectrum of civil, hydraulic and environmental engineering projects. Typical uses include gravity retaining walls, river training and channel protection, bridge and culvert scour protection, road and railway embankments, coastal and shoreline defense, and general erosion and slope-stabilization works. They are equally suited to landscaping and ecological restoration, where filled cages form attractive stone walls and terraces. Because construction depends on simple labour and locally available fill stone, gabion cages are especially valuable for infrastructure and water conservancy projects in regions with limited access to concrete plants.
